Kansas City, MO to O’Neill, NE
The day starts out with some confusion; since I was still on the Missouri side of Kansas City I felt obliged to at least ride into Kansas before setting my course towards north. However my GPS decides to get a life of its own and starts taking me in circles – very confusing. I think it was due to a combination of road updates and me going a bit too fast for the recalculation to work. Anyway, I eventually get onto the I29 heading north. Unfortunately the weather gods then decide to play tricks on me, bringing thunderstorms and rain my way. Instead of continuing up into central Iowa I try to avoid the worst storms by going west through Iowa and escaping into Nebraska. Most of the way I have vast cornfields on both sides. I even manage to find my way out into the fields. I can report that there are no mysterious crop circles in western Iowa or Nebraska!
I end up in the small town of O’Neill, which also means I have shortened my trip by almost one day, and will arrive in Rapid City almost a full day early.
The rain continues through the day and into the evening even after I have arrived in O’Neill. While I am sitting dry under an awning, the bike is getting its fair share of wetness! |
