The volcano erupted violently in 1980 and devastated the area. Forest has still not grown back at the higher elevations. Rivers of erosion are clearly visible.

Kay observed that the stone buildings were reminiscent of an old Irish fishing village, and I had to concur. This led us to the, slightly irreverent, theory that the Irish actually populated the area thousands of years before the Incas, and definitely before the Spanish arrived.
